New Foods We Tried Saturday

  Re: (...)
Oh boy, this is so fun. A waitstaff recommended a market for 'street food' that we should not miss while here and we made it to the market yesterday and what a hoot.

Tanioka's Seafoods and Catering has a policeman at the door allowing folks in as other come out and inside the line snakes back and forth a couple of times - but everyone except for the 'haulis' (sp?)(haoles - thanks for correction) know what they want, so the line really moves quickly.

It didn't take long for eveyone in line to know these darn 'haulis' (newcomers-haoles, thanks) didn't know what to order, so people in line started pointing to things in the cases that WE HAD TO TRY! They had a ball helping us through the choices and we loved that they did this for us. And we ended up with four items to try.

Fish patties - similar to crabcakes, but don't know what fish was used. Very good.

Spicy Ahi Poke - 1/2" chunks of Ahi seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt and other goodies. Really good.

Delux Spam Musubi - All the shoppers pointed at this one and said it was a must! And it was - super good. (and Roy bought a can of spam a couple months ago hinting for me to make something, so this will be it) It's a bar shape of layered sushi rice topped with spam and wrapped with nori. Just really tasty!

Shoyu Pork - yum.

I wanted to taste poi and here the folks let me down - they all pointed to these round glazed dounut looking things and said we'd like them. They were very good, but it was poi added to a donut batter is all. So I didn't get a flavor for poi used the way I've read about. Still searching for this taste.

Guess that's five and enjoyed every one.

The rest of the day was spent 'grazing' (sorry Tracie, but that's what we did - she dislikes that term! )

Kuilima Hotel - had Mai Tais and

Kalua pork sandwich
Beef Poke with a garnish of a square of gelatin made with chili peppers (looked like an aspic) - very hot, but wonderful with the poke. (something to play with at home)

on to a late dinner near the house -
12th St. Grill

I was so taken with my dish that I didn't really pay attention to what the others had.

Seafood Mascarpone Timbale (it was gorgeous and my camera was at home!!!!)

Blue crab, rock shrimp and scallops layered with asparagus & Tobiko caviar. Topped with local sweet corn, avocado and tomato salsa. Drizzled with lobster sauce and served with grilled bread.

Now, tell me how many of us could resist a description like that? I do wish someone had ordered the wild boar, it looked really delicious.

Met the chef, nice guy and what innovated dishes he comes up with. I think the rest of our days here are accounted for food-wise, so I don't think I can get back there... (he did something with pork belly too!)

so, that's our new tastes for Saturday. and copious amounts of wine...... I did try on the pants I wore over here and they still fit, so I'm not worrying about it, too much.

Jean, It sounds like you are having a fantastic time! How much fun to find the local places! Not just the touristy places.

Just so you truly enjoy your last few days there - it is raining and 44 here today. Typical November weather.

WOW! That's a lot of stuff! I can't believe you can still wear your pants...too funny! I'd be buying a moo moo (sp?). There's no way I wouldn't gain weight.

Jean that timbale sounds unbelievable! I can't believe you left your camera...shame on you! I'm guessing the spam was fried? I haven't had spam in years! What a fun thing to try! William's going to laugh his head off!

All the food sounds wonderful. Was the beef poke raw? Sounds intriguing. I keep thinking that it's about time for beef sashimi - and I do have a lovely jar of tobiko caviar in the fridge.

Wow, wonderful sounding meals! You will have a whole new cuisine to play with when you get home. I can't wait to see you re-create some of those dishes.

Delux Spam Musubi--that's the recipe I was looking for in "Share a Recipe Cookbook"

Oh how this haole loves ahi poke. And it's definitely easy to make at home.

The poi donuts are confusing me! I was going to say they sound like malasadas (portugese donuts) but I never heard anything about poi going into them.

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time.

The camera was at our temporary home.

Was the beef poke raw? - no, but was wonderful. We did have Ahi poke that was raw and wonderful too.
