Got this in one of those PLEASE PASS IT ON emails and I don't want to post that here - but I did check it out on SNOPES. I know most of us bake from scratch, but sometimes you might have that cake mix or brownie mix in the pantry. I loose track of the expiration dates ALL the time. Then I feel guilty about throwing it way. Do not use expired baking mixes...the mold spores that grow in yeast can be toxic..

It's not the yeast, it's the flour (pancake mixes don't use yeast, anyway), but this IS true. The main problem is aspergillus, which can produce aflatoxins. The immediately deadly aspect is actually only true for people with certain allergies, but aflatoxins are also extremely carcinogenic, so cancer can be a long-term problem even though most people wouldn't die right away.
