TUTORIAL: Photos as avatars and in forum messages
#6
  Re: (...)
The following instructions are based upon:
  1. Already having an account, if necessary, on the site where you will be hosting your photos.
  2. Using photos that are stored on your own computer. (Although it IS possible to use photos from other websites, cell phones, webcams, etc., these instructions will focus solely upon the most common usage: photos already on your computer.)
  3. Using those photos on the Cuisine at Home forum. (Most other forum sites will work the same way, but there ARE some that have a few differences.)
  4. Already having the photos edited to look the way you want them to look.
These instructions are divided into two main parts: how to upload photos to a site and get the links you need and how to use the links once you have them. The first part has the instructions for different image-hosting sites while the second part has the instructions for the two main uses of images in the forum: avatars and photos within messages.

IMAGE UPLOADING AND LINKS
FLICKR
  1. Log into your account. (Flickr requires you to have an account.)
  2. Click "Upload."
  3. Click "Choose photos and videos."
  4. Click one of the "Browse" buttons.
  5. In the window that comes up, navigate to where the desired photo is stored.
  6. Click on the name of the photo you wish to upload.
  7. Click "Open" to add the file to the upload list.
  8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 for up to five more files.
  9. Set the privacy settings for the photos as you wish.
  10. Click the "Upload" button to upload the photo(s).
  11. Near the top of the page, click on "You" to go to your "photostream."
  12. Navigate through your photos until you find the one you wish to use.
  13. Click on the desired photo.
  14. Click "Share this."
  15. Select "Grab the HTML/BBCode."
  16. Click the little circle in front of "BBCode."
  17. Click inside the box that has the code.
  18. Hold down the CTRL key and, while holding it, press the letter A to highlight all the text in that box.
  19. Hold down the CTRL key and, while holding it, press the letter C to copy the code for forum messages to your clipboard. (It IS possible to get a direct link, but the process is rather involved and I wouldn't recommend it. Furthermore, I would strongly recommend against trying to use Flickr to host an avatar.)
  20. Proceed to the message instructions.
IMAGESHACK
  1. Log into your account. (Optional. ImageShack does NOT require you to have an account.)
  2. If you logged into your account, click "Media upload" or "Upload images." Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
  3. Click the "Browse" button.
  4. In the window that comes up, navigate to where the desired photo is stored.
  5. Click on the name of the photo you wish to upload.
  6. Click "Open" to return to the upload page.
  7. Click "Upload now" to upload the photo.
  8. Click inside the box labelled "Direct link."
  9. Hold down the CTRL key and, while holding it, press the letter C to copy the direct link to your clipboard. (There IS a box for a forum-code link, but it also adds a promotional link naming ImageShack, so I suggest using the direct link.)
  10. Proceed to the avatar or message instructions.
PHOTOBUCKET
  1. Log into your account. (PhotoBucket requires you to have an account.)
  2. Click "Upload now."
  3. Click "Select photos and videos."
  4. In the window that comes up, navigate to where the desired photo(s) is(are) stored.
  5. Click on the name of the photo you wish to upload. If you wish to upload multiple files, you may select additional, individual files by holding down the CTRL key and clicking the names of the additional files or you may select a continuous group of files by holding down the SHIFT key and clicking on the LAST file of the group (the one you clicked first will be the first in the group).
  6. Click "Open" to upload the photo(s).
  7. Click "Save and continue to my album."
  8. Once your album is on the screen, move the mouse pointer over an individual photo. This will pop up a box containing a few different items, including several links.
  9. Click on the link labelled "Direct link" to copy a direct link (usable for avatars or messages) to your "clipboard" OR
  10. Click on the link labelled "IMG code" to copy the code for forum messages to your "clipboard."
  11. Proceed to the avatar or message instructions.

IMAGE USAGE
AVATARS
  1. Upload your image to ImageShack or PhotoBucket, as outlined above, and get the direct link.
  2. Log into your account on the Cuisine at Home forum.
  3. Click on "My Home."
  4. Click on the "Edit" link next to "Personal information, email, password, etc."
  5. Click inside the box labelled "URL to your avatar" (near the bottom of the page). Note that avatars may not be any larger than 100 x 100 pixels. If you need to resize a photo, I recommend Pixresizer. (The image-hosting sites do have some options to resize the image as part of the upload process, but it is obviously less time to upload an image that's already the right size.)
  6. Hold down the CTRL key and, while you are holding it, press the letter V to paste the link into that box.
  7. Click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the page.
POSTING IMAGES WITHIN MESSAGES
  1. Upload your image to Flickr, ImageShack or PhotoBucket, as outlined above, and get either the direct link or the forum-code, as you wish,
  2. Log into your account on the Cuisine at Home forum.
  3. Begin a new message or a reply to an existing thread, up to the point where you want your image to appear.
  4. If the link you copied earlier was a forum-message (BBCode) link, hold down the CTRL key and, while you are holding it, press the letter V to paste the link into the message at that point.
  5. If the link you copied earlier was the direct link and you are NOT entering your message into the the "Quick Reply" area at the bottom of an existing thread, click the "Image" link under "Instant UBB code," paste (CTRL-V) your direct link into the box that pops up and click "OK."
  6. If the link you copied earlier was the direct link, and you ARE entering your message into the "Quick Reply" area or if you just wish to enter the code directly, type a [ symbol, followed by the letters IMG, followed by a ] symbol, then paste (CTRL-V) the link into the message at that point. After that, "close the image tag" by typing a [ symbol, followed by a / symbol, followed by the letters IMG, followed by a ] symbol. The resulting code will look something like this:Code:
    Code:
    [img]YOUR_DIRECT_LINK[/img]
