caraway seeds? - Gourmet_Mom - 10-11-2009

I just realized I don't have any for the sausage & kraut pizza. Do I leave it off or sub? I have dill weed, cumin seed (I think), celery seed, and fennel seed.

Never thought of it, but here's what Cook's Thesaurus had to say:
Quote:

These are widely used in Eastern Europe, especially for flavoring rye bread, cheeses, and sauerkraut. Toast them first over low heat in a frying pan for a few minutes to bring out the aroma. Substitutes: dill seed (milder) OR anise seed OR cumin seed

I checked there, but I didn't have any of those. I just made it without the seeds. I don't think anybody noticed.

Welcome back Roxanne! I was really sorry to hear your news. I hope you are coping well. We're here for you.

Regarding the fennel, I came REALLY close to toasting some and throwing them on, but there wasn't a very large quantity of caraway seeds called for, so I decided to leave them out.
