Strawberry jam - Mare749 - 12-28-2012 Can someone give me an idea or two for using strawberry jam for something other than putting it on toast? My sister gave me a big jar of Amish made strawberry jam and while it is very tasty, it's not something I eat regularly. So, I need to find another use for this jam. (not a dessert) Re: Strawberry jam - Lorraine - 12-28-2012 I think adding it to balsamic vinegar and using that as a base for a salad dressing would be good. maybe add some to plain yogurt or sour cream and use it as a fruit dip. Re: Strawberry jam - Trixxee - 12-28-2012 My mom made a whole bunch of strawberry freezer jam last summer and I couldn't eat it fast enough on toast so Tony used a little on cottage cheese and I would put a spoonful into my morning berry smoothie. I was also putting it on pound cake but that obviously is a dessert. Re: Strawberry jam - labradors - 12-28-2012
Re: Strawberry jam - Gourmet_Mom - 12-28-2012 I like the vinaigrette idea! Erin does a lot of jelly and jam. Maybe she will have some other ideas. Re: Strawberry jam - Harborwitch - 12-28-2012 I had to Google this, I have the cookbook (but not here). This was one of our favorite chicken dishes. Bob's Mom just loved it! I think I'll have to make this again soon! Strawberry Chicken Recipe By : Serving Size : 4 Preparation Time :0:00 Categories : Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method -------- ------------ -------------------------------- 8 ounces tomato sauce 1 cup strawberry jam 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon chili powder (I used penzey's medium hot) 1/2 teaspoon thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 2 1/4 pounds skinless chicken thighs -- bone-in 3 cups hot cooked rice 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions In a shallow 3-quart casserole, mix tomato sauce, jam, vinegar, chili powder, thyme, and ginger. Add chicken to sauce and turn to coat. Bake in a 400 oven, basting occasionally, until meat near bone is no longer pink (about 45 minutes). Season to taste with salt. Spoon rice onto a platter. Top with chicken, sauce, and onions. Makes 4-6 servings. Source: "The Best of Sunset Lowfat Cookbook" Re: Strawberry jam - esgunn - 12-28-2012 Like Lorraine said. My favorite use right now is in salad dressing. I used an Orange/Muscat/champagne vinegar, evoo, and a spoon of strawberry jam, salt and pepper. Yummy. I also use raspberry white balsamic, evoo, and raspberry jam. How about spicing it up and making a BBQ sauce with it. Or add some peppers and some cayenne and serve over cream cheese. Re: Strawberry jam - esgunn - 12-28-2012 Oh yeah, like trixee said: we put jam in smoothies. Also stir into plain greek yogurt. Re: Strawberry jam - Lorraine - 12-28-2012 making a BBQ sauce with it" We us apricot Jam, but I think the strawberry may work well. For appetizers, you could add it to a balsamic glaze and top s chicken or pork crostini or turnover. Not sure if it would be assertive enough to use with your venison. Re: Strawberry jam - Trixxee - 12-28-2012 Like the bbq sauce idea. Why not switch out cherry jam for strawberry jam for the cherry cola ribs? I really have found that jams are really interchangeable. |
